In the push to develop cleaner, greener cars, the bulk of the efforts has gone into EVs. Their growing market share has important implications for the electricity grid which will require additional capacity to generate, transmit and deliver additional energy, especially during peak demand times.
Yet hydrogen vehicles are another alternative that some OEMs are investing in. At present the market for hydrogen cars is well behind EVs but some think it can be a more viable option for larger vehicles, such as heavy goods vehicles, buses, and even rolling stock.
R&D is accelerating for various forms of storage, with the promise of more economic deployment at scale in the near future. This progress  brings load-shifting and electric reliability within reach of more utilities and customers.  Looking ahead, should we expect incremental improvements or technological breakthroughs?
